Nemhauser Dissertation Prize

Congratulation to the winner of the 2019 Nemhauser Dissertation Prize:

Raghu Bollapragada, for his dissertation titled, “Methods for Deterministic and Stochastic Optimization.”

The following from professor Norcedal’s nomination letter summarizes the dissertation’s contributions well, “This thesis is outstanding because of its depth and novelty. The most innovative aspect of his research relates to the topics of dynamic sampling and Hessian subsampling in stochastic optimization methods for machine learning. … This research has three components: algorithmic, theoretical and computational, and Raghu has shown a mastery of them all.”
